WebHemiballism is caused by a lesion of the subthalamic nucleus on one side of the brain. It is characterised by wild involuntary movements of the contralateral side of the body which may be so large as to prevent patients from feeding or dressing themselves. This is usually caused by a vascular lesion, and often resolves within a few weeks.
