A logarithmic/audio pot gives a smoother variation in volme throughout the travel of the pot, whereas a linear one would have all the variation at one end of the pot travel. I was looking for a wide-open, high treble sound, and my pickups' manual said the pickups' resonant frequency jumps by 1800Hz when using 1M pots. Wow. The difference was amazing, of course.
